Dear Jane (Opened sept’ 1978)
First chorus
Little Jane, take father’s hand and let him walk you through the rain
In the mist that wraps the morning like a chain
Over deep furrows
The land soon drained of everything.
Verse one
Keep close by him, for in his shadow you’ll never know hunger or tire
He’s made chairs from the swollen branches
Brought down by the weight of the fruit
(for all we had was plenty and nothing went to waste
to cook away the flavour, Jim said, was how to taste x2)
second chorus
Little Jane, take fathers hand and let him walk you through the pain
When you’re a woman it’ll have a different name
There’s a darkness
That so seldom holds its form.
Verse two
Through the tree line, in the branches
Across the wide estate
Lay all the restless horrors, Jim knew to create
He had us run and scream
To the bush with tools in hand
To drive out all the evil and hatred in every man
But I’ve read each their letters
And as the food grows scarce
In the heat there grows an anger
Consuming father’s face
Pain twists within him and his skin crawls and splits
Then from it steps the devil, whom we all could not resist
First chorus repeat
Verse three
Cups of many colours,
Pass between each hand.
We drain the simple liquid that tastes so much of home
The children have become quiet
The animals still and strange
I take one last look at father, then smile with the pain.

It was the coldest day of the year so far
he said, don't worry i wont travel too far
but i'll bring back, enough fish to feed this whole town
for a day or two
he's been gone
for a day or two
and the waves bring back nothing, but the salt as they swell.
all the years by the piers,
all the years without fear.
Oh my dear one, how must i carry on.
and this years colder than the last
and yet
the souls in the wind pull me back and forth
but he'll bring back enough fish to feed this whole town
for a day or two
i'll keep watching for a day or two
Ive seen the waves bring back
a broken mast and the nets he'd cast
I've seen the waves bring back
a broken mast and the nets he'd cast.
all the years by the piers
all the years without fear
oh my dear one, how can i carry on.

They’re working late again tonight.
Verse one
They’re working late again, tonight
Underneath bright lights and a blackened sky
And in these sleepless hours
Strange images plague my thoughts.
Dust pushed from the bones of an ancient being
An unfamiliar form not known ‘til now
Or the destruction of a brave new world
By the hands of time.
Then one night it came to an end
The lights shining
And the site was still and strange
But for all the earthly quiet
Something still remained.
It crawled among the sleeping bodies
Filled their lungs and rose into the air
Like smoke
And a change came over the town
As everyone one awoke.
Pre-chorus, repeated twice.
(They sang a song as they walked along,
Hand in hand by the edge of town.)
Oh. They. Said.
Chorus repeated twice
Who do you think has been keeping you sick?
They sell the medicine, oh, they sell the medicine.
Verse two
The town is empty and the streets are wild
The houses crumble,
sunlight bleeds through the soil
And the shop signs all swing on a rusted hinge.
No smoke rise from the chimney stacks
No flames burn and turn the sky black
No oils is drawn up from the ground
And the drills stand in silence
Pre-chorus
Chorus
End

There's some streets in town
you just can't walk down
yes, theres some streets in town, you just cant walk down
for no other reason than you're tired of seeing the rich folks frown
well, they love their music and they love their wine
and they ain't above stepping below the line
at the weekend, every saturday night
one night a week, so they can feel alright.
you like your eyes blackened and your lips swollen
like your skin torn and your fingers broken
being choked and held to the ground
cigarette burns and being tightly bound
you say you're soul searching, searching in this part of town
still searching for someone to tie you down
aint never found no one, who'll love you and push you down.
